FRANKLIN, Ind. - Franklin got off to a fast start by winning two of three doubles matches Wednesday and went on to defeat Transylvania 7-2, depriving the Pioneers of their second straight Heartland Conference women's tennis championship.
The Pioneers finish regular season play with a 6-2 record, 6-2 HCAC, while Franklin clinched the conference regular season title with an 8-0 record. The Grizzlies were 11-2 overall. Rose-Hulman will have the second seed in the upcoming HCAC tournament this weekend in Indianapolis with Transy the third seed.
Transy's No. 1 doubles team of
Claire Mielcarek and
Kaitlin Hizny won 8-5 and Mielcarek completed an undefeated HCAC season at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win. But Franklin swept the rest of the matches to clinch the No. 1 seed.
Transy will face No. 6 Manchester at 9 a.m. Saturday at the West Indy Racquet Club. The winner of that match gets a date with Rose-Hulman at 2 p.m. Saturday. The HCAC Championship will be decided at 10 a.m. Sunday with the winner getting the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
