FRANKLIN, Ind. - Transylvania women's soccer rolled over conference opponent Franklin 3-1 Tuesday evening, recording their second conference victory of the season.
"I thought we played up to our potential and we refocused ourselves on the things that have allowed us to be successful as a team," said Head Coach
Michael Fulton. "Our strategy was to apply as much pressure as possible. We believed that we would be the stronger team and wanted to establish the tempo early."
And apply the pressure, they did. The Pioneers set the pace of the game from the onset as senior
Abby Felthaus attempted a shot on goal merely 45 seconds into the matchup.
With the momentum on their side, t wasn't long before Transylvania was first on the scoreboard. Freshman
Meredith Murphy chipped a shot over the Franklin goalkeeper from ten yards away, scoring her first goal of the season as the ball sailed inside the left post.
Franklin made one goal before halftime, but despite a home-field advantage, the Grizzlies could not keep up with the Pioneers' pace. Transylvania took three times as many shots as their opponent, littering the Grizzlie's net with 15 shots compared to Franklin's five.
Senior
Anne Marie Dumaine was the next to up the score, assisted by senior
Carley Williams, netting her fourth goal of the season. Within less than a minute, Dumaine made another shot, but it sailed just high of the Franklin net.
Just five minutes before the end of regulation, senior
Amy Ghibaudy nailed the final goal of the game, sealing a 3-1 win for the Pioneers. Ghibaudy has been a key force for the Pioneers over the past several games, which Coach Fulton recognized post-game.
"
Amy Ghibaudy has been a standout player," said Coach Fulton. "She is playing very well and her work ethic is creating many opportunities for the team while creating her own scoring opportunities."
After the loss earlier in the week, the sense of urgency was hightened, giving great motivation for a win.
"Our loss this past weekend was enough motivation to win this game," said Coach Fulton. "We needed to get back on track to what has allowed us to have a good season thus far, and our determination showed tonight."
Transylvania improves to 2-1-1 in conference, and is currently ranked fourth in HCAC standings, one spot ahead of the Grizzlies. The Pioneers are 8-3-2 overall heading into a tough matchup against HCAC frontrunner Rose-Hulman, a game which Coach Fulton knows will be a challenge.
"It will be a tough game and I know Amy will have them organized and ready to play," said Coach Fulton. "We have to stay focused on winning one game at a time to get ourselves back to the top of the conference. It will be a big day."
The home game will coincide with the opening of Transylvania's new athletic complex Saturday on West Fourth Street at 1 p.m.
