GRANVILLE, Ohio - Transylvania's women soccer took a loss to Denison College Saturday, falling 1-3 in Granville, Ohio.
Denison scored both the first and second goals of the game, but Transylvania was able to regroup at halftime and come back.
"Down 1-0 at the half, we had to do two things to get back into this game," said Head Coach
Michael Fulton. "One, maintain more possession than in the second half. Two, figure out a way to bypass their midfield pressure."
The Pioneers picked up the offensive pressure in the second half, with senior
Michelle Schroeck making a successful shot off a rebound . "Michelle played well today, and as a result scored our only goal," said Coach Fulton.
The Pioneers, however, were not able to overcome Denison, who scored one last goal before the buzzer.
"For the most part, we did what we set out to do in the second half, but didn't get the result we wanted," said Coach Fulton.
Coach Fulton highlighted the leadership of seniors
Anne Marie Dumaine and Michelle Schroek. "Anne Marie is a consistent leader for us in the back and we rely on her leadership each and every game," he said.
Freshman
Charlotte Pruet's success on the field was also noted by Coach Fulton.
"Charlotte is trying to earn her spot on the field," he said. "Today she played more like an upperclassman than a freshman."
Despite his pride in these players, Coach Fulton will be focused on the team's improvement over the course of the week.
"We gave away the ball too many times and surrendered two goals on set pieces," he said. "We must get better at defending set pieces, and to do so we have to want to win the ball more than the other team."
The key, Coach Fulton says, is consistency.
"To become the team we think we can be, we must be consistent week in and week out," said Coach Fulton. "Today we suffered a loss because we didn't stay true to our strengths," he said."The positive is that when we stick to our style of play we can and will be successful.
The Pioneers (2-2) will face Centre College on September 17 at 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
