Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky.- A goal with less than two minutes to play helped Franklin College escape with a 2-1 win over the Transylvania University women's soccer team Wednesday at Pat Deacon Stadium.
With the scored knotted at one apiece, as the final two minutes drew near it appeared the Pioneers were heading to overtime for the fourth time this season. However, Franklin's Masey Bunn added the go-ahead goal as the Grizzlies edged Transylvania in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match.
After a scoreless first half, the shots were flying in the opening minute of the second half both teams found their offensive groove. Franklin's Claire Lenart threatened with a shot on goal in the 55th minute, but Morgan Potts scooped it up to keep the score even at zero albeit not for long.
The Pioneer offense wasted no time, taking the ball down the field as Morgan Janes sent a shot off the crossbar nearly giving the Pioneers a 1-0 nod, as the Franklin goalkeeper fumbled the ball appearing to give the Pioneers the goal. The referees disagreed but that didn't slow the Transylvania offense. Alyssa Kruse sent her fifth goal of the year into the back of the net at the 63:08 mark as she stormed toward the goal from the left side and lined a 16' giving the Pioneers a timely goal and a 1-0 lead.
Kruse's goal appeared to be enough to give the Pioneers their first HCAC win of the season until Franklin answered with a goal from Jasmine Hunt in the 71st minute as the ball sailed just over the outstretched hands of Potts.
The Transylvania offense continued to press, while the defense stiffened. Franklin was awarded a corner in the 75th minute, but the Transylvania defense held allowing the Pioneer offense to take it the length of the field as Kruse sent another liner towards Young, but Young came up with the stop.
The teams came away empty handed as they traded shots in the closing minutes before Bunn added the game winner to lift the Grizzlies to their second HCAC win, while Pioneers fall to 0-2 in conference play.
Franklin tallied 16 shots in the contest to Transylvania's 11, while both teams logged six corners.
The Pioneers travel to Rose-Hulman Saturday for another HCAC match. Saturday's match is slated for 1 p.m.
