Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University women's soccer team scored early and never looked back in a 3-0 win over the visiting Bluffton University Beavers in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday.
Transy dominated on both sides of the ball, controlling possession, applying steady pressure on the Beavers' defense and stymieing the Bluffton offense in a thorough and complete match. The Pioneers took 25 shots in the contest, including 13 on target, while keeping the Beavers out of the scoring column by not allowing them to take a single shot.
The Pioneers made their impact on the game early with a goal from midfielder Lindsey Sizemore in the 13th minute to give Transylvania a 1-0 lead. The goal, which was assisted by midfielder Charlotte Pruet, was an exclamation mark on the half that saw Transy take 11 shots.
In the closing period, it was midfielder Maddie Sjogren who gave the Pioneers the boost they were looking for, as she scored two goals early in the half. Her first goal came just three minutes into the second half, beating the Bluffton goalkeeper to push Transy ahead 2-0. In the 56th minute, Sjogren took a long pass from Sizemore and pushed forward into a breakaway to give the Pioneers a three-goal advantage.
The win came at a much needed time for the Pioneers, as they press to stay one of the top-four teams in the HCAC and earn a berth in the conference tournament.
"We picked up an important win in the HCAC race today," said head coach Michael Fulton. "We controlled most of the game and I was happy with the patience we showed at times. It was also nice that we could honor our one senior, Erin Miller, with a win on Senior Day."
With the win, Transylvania moves to 6-7-2 and 4-2-1 in HCAC play. They will return to action on Tuesday with a home matchup against Hanover College.
