Box Score ADA, Ohio—An aggressive Ohio Northern offense and stifling Polar Bear defense kept the Transylvania University women's soccer team at bay on Wednesday night, as ONU defeated the Pioneers 4-0.
The Polar Bears wasted no time pressuring Transylvania's defense, taking a shot less than three minutes into the game. It was the first of four shots in the opening 12 minutes for ONU. The forward play paid off as Ohio Northern got on board at the 11:59 mark in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead. Just 10 minutes later, the Polar Bears took a two-goal advantage on a penalty kick with 23 minutes to play in the first half.
Transylvania's defense tightened up over the remainder of the half, allowing just one more shot on goal for ONU, which was saved by goalkeeper Ally Barfield. After 45 minutes of play, the Pioneers entered the locker room trailing 2-0.
The Pioneers looked to cut into the deficit quickly in the second half with a flurry of shots in the first 15 minutes of the period. Midfielder Morgan Janes put a shot on goal four minutes into the period but her effort was saved by the ONU goalie, keeping the score 2-0. Just five minutes later, midfielder Gabby Prevost took another crack at goal for the Pioneers but she pushed her shot wide right and at the 59:07 mark, midfielder Charlotte Pruet fired a shot on goal, but she too was deterred by the ONU keeper.
Transy held off the Polar Bear attack early in the second half, allowing just four shots in the first 18 minutes of the period. However, ONU was able to extend their lead to three goals at the 62:47 mark. Ohio Northern got their fourth and final goal of the match on a weak shot attempt that came off of a deflection in front of the net with 15 minutes left in the contest.
Transylvania completes its non-conference schedule with a record of 2-5-1 and will seek to improve in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Pioneers return to action on Oct. 3 in their HCAC opener at Manchester University.
