Box Score Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's soccer team fell 1-0 at the hands of the Franklin Grizzlies, in what was a very physical, spirited effort from the Pioneers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday night.
The game got off to a positive start for the Pioneers as they did a good job of controlling the ball in the middle of the field throughout the first half. However, scoring opportunities were scarce, as the Grizzlies outshot the Pioneers 5-2 in the first 45 minutes.
After 15 minutes of stellar play from Transylvania, Franklin would claim the first goal of the game on a change-of-pace breakaway, which would also prove to be the game's only goal.
The Pioneers nearly responded just minutes after the Franklin goal, as a cross from senior Erin Snyder on the left side of the field curved just wide of the right post.
The second half of the game was a bright spot for the Pioneers, as they controlled the ball even better than the first half. Transylvania also picked up its offensive game, as the Pioneers shot the ball on par with Franklin, 8 to 8 in the second half.
The Pioneers' last chance to score the equalizer came in the final minute of the game. Transylvania was awarded a free kick just outside of the Franklin box. Junior Morgan Janes took the free kick, and her shot went just wide left, off the fingers of the diving Grizzlies' goalkeeper. The ensuing corner kick would yield no result, and the game ended with the final score of 1-0.
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Potts performed admirably in the Pioneers' defeat. Potts recorded five saves in the game while only giving up one goal to the Grizzlies. Potts also helped to lead her team vocally, as she was in constant communication with the defensive line all night.
Transylvania is back in action this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. as they host conference foe Anderson. The game against the Ravens is part of the men's and women's soccer teams' Senior Day doubleheader.
