Wall's goal at the death provides dramatic end to Transylvania women's soccer season

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day 2017 in style as senior defender Megan Wall scored a game-winning goal in the 90th minute, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 victory over the Bluffton Beavers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, the Pioneers celebrated a group of six seniors including Wall, Morgan Janes, Abby Van Bussum, Ellie New, Darcy Simpson, and Lindsey Sizemore as they competed in their final game as Transylvania Pioneers.

The Pioneers dominated the first half as the team kept the ball on its attacking third throughout the period. Transylvania outshot the Beavers 27-0 in the first half with seven of those shots being made on goal.

However, the Bluffton goalkeeper and defense held strong and the Pioneers were unable to take a lead before halftime.

The second half began with each team taking its turn moving the ball around the field, but the Pioneers continued to dominate offensively as Transylvania recorded 16 more shots in the second half.

With the score still tied at 0-0 and the final minutes of the Pioneers' season waning, Transylvania mounted one last attack.

After Bluffton forced the ball out of bounds, Sizemore sent a corner kick towards the box that eventually found the foot of Wall, whose shot crossed the goal line giving the Pioneers the 1-0 lead with just seconds remaining.

The Pioneers defense kept the Beavers from creating an attack in the final 30 seconds, giving the Pioneers an emotional 1-0 Senior Day victory.

The Pioneers defense held strong throughout the day, as it did not allow the Beavers to take a single shot on goal. Transylvania goalkeeper Haley Blackburn earned the shutout, Transylvania's sixth of the season.

The victory moved Transylvania's record to 6-9-3 overall, and 4-4-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers finish the season in sixth place in the conference standings.
