Box Score Cincinnati, Ohio – After a long night of jousting with its conference foe, the Transylvania women's soccer team endured an unfavorable result, falling to the Mount St. Joseph University Lions, 1-0 in double overtime on Wednesday night at Schueler Field.
In a match which included its fair share of regulation opportunities for both sides, the contest appeared to be headed for a laborious stalemate. But the Lions used a set piece opportunity early in the second overtime to send Pioneer goalkeeper Morgan Patton extending back for a save and deflection that was slotted away on the second chance by Mount St. Joseph strikers who tracked the ball to end the night instantaneously.
Transylvania fell to 2-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and 7-5-1 overall while the Lions improved to 4-0-1 in conference play and 7-7-1 overall.
The Pioneers ignited their offense with two early chances in the first 12 minutes of the match. Caitlin Fike and Brooke Puterbaugh each took their turns testing the Lions keeper but she was at the ready on both attempts to keep the Pioneers in check. Baker nearly assisted Puterbaugh on her cross from the right side, but every opportunity continued to be snuffed out.
The Pioneers manifested three shots on goal in the first half to two shots on goal by the Lions, but the Lions only yielded one shot on goal to the Pioneers the rest of regulation.
Transylvania created one more chance prior to the golden goal in the first possession of the second overtime as Baker went on a long run to set up Rawls for a left-side attempt. The Lions earned the final necessary stop of the night against the Pioneers to set up their eventual game-winning run.
Patton earned four saves on the evening for the Pioneers in 102 minutes maintaining goal.
The Pioneers are back in action at home on Saturday, October 16 to face the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers in an HCAC contest. The opening kick between the Pioneers and Engineers is set for 1:00 p.m. from Pat Deacon Stadium, the first match of an HCAC doubleheader from the Transylvania pitch.
