Box Score Franklin, Ind. – The Transylvania women's soccer team battled the Franklin Grizzles for 110 minutes to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night.
The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup served as the final fixture of regular season action for the Pioneers as they completed the 2020-21 slate with a 5-2-1 record. The Grizzles record goes to 4-2-1.
Transylvania applied pressure early and was awarded a corner kick in the 2
nd minute.
Abby Baker received the corner kick and looked to put the Pioneers ahead early as she blew by the Franklin defender and placed the shot just wide left of goal.
Emilie Yates found an opportunity to give her team the lead when she struck from outside the box and the Franklin goalkeeper pounced on top of the ball to keep the match scoreless in the 15
th minute.
Transylvania advanced the ball into the attacking half for majority of the first half, but both teams went into the break locked in a stalemate.
Early in the second half, the Grizzlies looked the grab the lead on a counterattack. However,
Morgan Patton quickly snuffed out the opposition scoring chance as she secured the ball from the Grizzly forwards in the 52
nd minute.
The Grizzles attempted to take hold of the contest late in the second half on a header over the Pioneers' defensive line that Patton saved to maintain the scoreless affair in the 82
nd minute.
The Pioneers pushed the attack in one final effort to take the lead in the last minute, but the final shot was saved by the Grizzlies goalkeeper keeping the score level at 0-0 at the end of regulation.
During the first half of extra time, both teams traded possessions until the Grizzles attempted to end the game in the final minute of the first overtime. However, the Pioneer defense forced the Franklin shot high, forcing a second dose of extra time.
The second overtime mirrored the first as both teams fought to score the golden goal. Patton prevented the Grizzles from stealing the match in the 108
th minute with a miraculous save to preserve the draw.
The Pioneers applied pressure to Franklin's defense, outshooting Franklin 12-6. Transylvania also won 11 corners to the Grizzles' zero.
Patton recorded four saves in 110 minutes of action for the shutout performance.
Transylvania clinched the number 3 seed in the upcoming HCAC postseason, which will have a modified format for the condensed 2020-21 season, featuring single postseason matches between the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded teams, the No. 3 and 4 seeded teams, and corresponding matches in descending order. Wednesday's regular-season finale sets up a rematch between No. 3 seed Transylvania and No. 4 seed Franklin to be hosted by the Pioneers.
No. 3 Transylvania takes on No. 4 seed Franklin on Thursday, April 8 at Pat Deacon Stadium at 7:00 p.m. to culminate the HCAC postseason.
