Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Transylvania women’s soccer concludes 2020-21 season on short side of overtime stunner

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's soccer team saw its season come to an abrupt end with a 1-0 double-overtime loss to the Franklin College Grizzlies in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason match at Pat Deacon Stadium on Thursday evening.

The Transylvania offense maintained control of the ball throughout most of the evening. The Pioneers outshot Franklin 14-3 in the game and earned 10 total corner kicks while the Grizzlies only mustered five.

After an uneventful opening 30 minutes, the game was halted due to lightning in the Lexington area. After the delay, the teams returned to the pitch to play out the final 16 minutes of the half.

Despite outshooting the Grizzlies 6-1 in the first half, the Pioneers were unable to find the back of the net, and the game remained scoreless going into the halftime break.

With 22 minutes left in regulation, the Grizzlies nearly clinched victory as a dangerous ball was sent into the box towards the Transylvania goal. However, Pioneer keeper Morgan Patton made an outstanding collection, and the score remained level at 0-0.

Moments later, Emilie Yates provided the Pioneers' offense with a quality scoring chance as she received a corner kick and sent a header just wide of the goalmouth.

Despite a flurry of Transylvania shots in the waning moments of regulation, no goal was to be had, and the game went to extra time.

The lone scoring chance of the first overtime period came via Abby Baker, who sent a chip shot towards goal that sailed just over the top of the crossbar.

Then, in the 103rd minute, Franklin's Dianna Rollag sent a free kick over the Transylvania defense and into the net, delivering the Grizzlies the 1-0 win.

With the loss, the Pioneers' season comes to an end with a 5-3-1 record, while Franklin's final record stands at 4-2-1.
