Gambier, Ohio – The Transylvania women's soccer team took advantage of its opportunities to capture its third win of the season in a 2-1 road victory over the Kenyon College Ladies at Mavec Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win vaults the Pioneers to 3-2 on the season while Kenyon drops to 1-4 on the season following the loss.
Transylvania asserted a 2-1 lead in the first half in dramatic fashion and shut out Kenyon for the duration of the second half to earn a quality victory to close out its Ohio weekend road trip.
The Pioneers found their offensive rhythm early as
Emilie Yates played a long ball to put
Abby Baker in a one-on-one situation with her defender on the left side of the pitch. Baker darted past her defender and fired a shot to the near post to beat the goalkeeper and open up a 1-0 lead for the Pioneers in the 8
th minute.
Kenyon found the equalizer in the 34
th minute after a corner kick saw the ball loose in the box. The Kenyon attacker found the top corner of the goal to level the score at 1-1.
Transylvania remained positive as the Pioneers looked for a counterattack in the minutes following the equalizer. After a long goal kick from
Morgan Patton, a Kenyon defender failed to clear the ball properly.
Meredith Campbell collected possession and played a ball that opened up
Rachel Green for an opportunity. The freshman grasped this chance and placed a pinpoint shot into the bottom corner to put the Pioneers on top, 2-1 in the 42
nd minute.
The Ladies pressured the Pioneers in the second half with 14 shots, four of which were on target. Patton saved all four opportunities and the Pioneers won 2-1 as the final whistle blew.
The Pioneers travel back to Lexington to face the Asbury University Eagles on Wednesday, September 15. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
