Anderson, Ind. – The Transylvania women's soccer team was upended by the Anderson University Ravens, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener at AU Soccer Stadium.
Transylvania dropped to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play while the Ravens began conference play with a 1-0-0 record while to moving to 2-5-1 overall.
Aiming to begin conference play with a bang, both teams traded shots with each other in the opening quarter-hour as Abby Baker and Brooke Puterbaugh delivered shots. Morgan Patton showed off her stout efforts in goal with two saves in the first 11 minutes. The Pioneers earned two corner kicks over the final nine minutes of the half, but couldn't find the opening goal as an evenly-played first 45 minutes resulted in a 0-0 deadlock.
The Pioneers struck first on the afternoon as Abby Baker knocked in her third goal of the season in the 59th minute, giving Transy a 1-0 advantage. But the lead was short-lived for the Pioneers as the Ravens scored their first goal of the match two and a half minutes later to level the game at 1-1. Anderson's momentum swelled as the Ravens found paydirt less than two minutes after their equalizer to take a 2-1 advantage in the 64th minute.
The Pioneers manifested just one more shot the rest of the afternoon as the Ravens' defense spruced up with their newfound lead. The teams each had 12 total shots for the day as the Pioneers and Ravens each delivered five shots apiece in the second half. Baker led the way with two shots on goal while Patton finished the contest with four saves.
Transylvania will aim for its first conference victory of the season on Saturday, October 2 at the Defiance College Yellow Jackets in Defiance, Ohio. The match is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start from Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
