Danville, Ky. – The Transylvania softball team continued their impressive start to the season by winning their third and final game of the Centre College Invite, defeating the Centre College Colonels by a final score of 8-4. Their second game of the day ended as a forfeit, moving the Pioneers to 4-0 on the season.
After a commanding opening day in which the Pioneers went 2-0 by a combined score of 45-1, they returned to the field on Sunday and earned another win after a back and forth game.
A sacrifice fly from Annie Schuck opened the scoring for Transy in the bottom of the first, and Carlee Jeter struck out the side in the bottom of the opening frame.
Jeter kept the Colonel offense at bay for the first three innings until they broke through in the fourth, putting up 4 runs. After two games in which they forced the mercy rule the day prior, the Pioneers found themselves down 4-1, but had a quick response.
In the top of the fifth inning, back to back doubles from Becca Messing and Kadi Weaver cut into the deficit and made the score 4-2. Three batters later, with two outs, Taylor Senter tied the game in style with a long ball to right center, her first home run of the season.
With Jeter's strong pitching, the Pioneers fielding made quick work in both the fifth and sixth innings, keeping the game at a 4-4 tie.
Moving into the seventh inning, still in a deadlock, Transylvania's bats came to life yet again. Starting with a double from Alyssa Nunn, the Pioneers had several key hits to not only take the lead, but add insurance to it as well. Doubles from Schuck and Kinsey Smith made the lead 8-4.
Transylvania took the field to close things out in the bottom of the seventh, and a quick 1-2-3 inning retired the side to end the game.
Jeter went the distance in the circle, pitching seven innings with six strikeouts. She moves to 2-0 on the season.
The Pioneers return to the field on Friday March 4, for a series in Columbus, Georgia.
