Lexington, Ky. - On Wednesday evening, the Transylvania University softball team took on their rivals, the Centre College Colonels. It was a windy day in Lexington, but other than that the weather was perfect for a softball doubleheader.
In the first game of the pair, the Pioneers played great in most aspects of the game. They hit well and backed it up with strong pitching and fielding, going on to win 7-0.
Stella Wulker got the win in the circle for the Pioneers, as she pitched a complete 7 inning shutout while allowing only three hits and walking only three batters. The hot hitting Bats put on a show in the first game, as in total they hit four doubles, from Kadi Weaver, Carson Murray, Abby Frazier, and Taylor Senter. Transylvania also had two triples, one from Senter and the other from Becca Messing, whose three-bagger brought home 3 baserunners in the fifth inning. Murray hit the only home run of the game with a two run blast in the sixth.
In the second game the Pioneers started right where they had left off, scoring four runs in the first inning after an RBI single from Weaver, a massive two run homer from Senter, and an RBI sacrifice fly from Kinsey Smith. In the bottom of the second the Pioneers added to the lead after Nunn scored on a passed ball.Â
The Pioneers went scoreless in the third, but in the bottom of the fourth they found another run from Nunn by a passed ball. The score was 6-1 heading into the fifth and the Pioneers brought in Zoey Fuller for her first pitching appearance of the season. Marlee Woodward ended her day in the circle with a strong performance, allowing only one run and 4 hits.Â
In the bottom of the fifth the Pioneers scored another run, this time from an RBI single by Nunn to bring home Messing and make it 7-1. A double from Murray with the bases loaded in the fifth finished out the day for the Pioneers as it brought home Weaver and Nunn to end the game 9-1 due to the run rule.
The Pioneers take on Manchester University in their next outing on Saturday April 2, as they head into conference play with a home doubleheader against the Spartans, with a 1 & 3 PM scheduled start.Â
