Terre Haute, Ind.- The Transylvania softball team was back in action for more HCAC play on Saturday afternoon, matched up against the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers for a road doubleheader.
Game 1- As the first game of the doubleheader got started, neither team was able to score in the opening inning, although Transylvania's Stella Wulker doubled as she was the first Pioneer to reach base on the day.
In the second the Pioneers started to roll, scoring a total of five runs in the inning. Those runs came after Carson Murray doubled, advancing Annie Schuck to third base. Murray then advanced to third and Schuck scored from a passed ball to put the Pioneers up 1-0. Murray was then brought home from an RBI single from Kinsey Smith. Later in the inning, with two runners on, Wulker came up for her second at-bat of the game, and she took full advantage, hitting a three run blast of a home run to make the score 5-0. The score stayed the same as Rose-Hulman was unable to reach base in the bottom half of the second, with Carlee Jeter in control.
In the top of the third, the Pioneers were able to hit another home run, this time coming from Schuck to make the score 6-0. In the bottom of the third, Jeter continued to keep runners off base as the Engineers went three up and three down. The Pioneers finished their scoring for the day in the top of the fourth inning, as Wulker scored another run, coming home on a double from Alyssa Nunn to make the score 7-0. Seven was the lucky number for the Pioneers, as they allowed only one run, which came in the bottom of the seventh inning and took first win of the doubleheader by a score of 7-1.
Game 2- In the second match of the day the Engineers were the first to get on the board in the bottom half of the first inning. The score stayed at 1-0 until the top of the third, as the Pioneers found their first run of the game. Wulker continued to make an impact, this time drawing a walk, then stealing second and advanced to third on a groundout. She then reached home on a wild pitch to knot up the score. Rose-Hulman found two more runs in the bottom half of the third inning to go up by a score of 3-1, but the three runs proved to be all the Pioneers allowed for the rest of the game.
In the top of the fourth the Pioneers were able to tie the score from runs scored by Schuck and Ry'Ann Tharp. In the top of the fifth the Pioneers added two more as, Wulker hit a solo home run and Murray was walked with the bases loaded. The Pioneers finished their scoring for the day in the top of the sixth inning, as they tacked on four more runs, including an RBI double from Taylor Senter. The next inning was scoreless as the Pioneers held their lead to take the 9-3 win and the sweep over Rose-Hulman. The Pioneers move to 21-9 on the season and 9-1 in the conference after an impressive win streak that currently sits at seven games.
The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 23rd for a 1:00 PM scheduled start in a doubleheader against Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.
