Lexington, Ky. - On Saturday afternoon, the Transylvania University softball team took on the Beavers of Bluffton University. It was Senior Day for the Pioneers, as the careers of Becca Messing, Alyssa Nunn, and Jordyn Powell were recognized. Also recognized were seniors Taylor Senter and Annie Schuck who intend to use their fifth year of eligibility and return to the field for next season. Congratulations to these seniors and thank you all for your impact on the Transylvania softball team!
Game 1- In game one, the Pioneers were able to get on the board first after Nunn came home on a fielding error to make it 1-0. The Pioneers held Bluffton scoreless in the first and second behind stellar pitching from Carlee Jeter and solid fielding by the entire defense.Â
Transy's second run came in the next inning, after first-year Ry'Ann Tharp hit a double down the left field line to score junior Carson Murray. The fourth inning was another big one for the Pioneers, as they added three more runs. Schuck doubled to drive in two, and Murray singled down the left field line to bring home Schuck and make the score 5-0.Â
The game took a dramatic turn in the seventh and final inning of the game, as Bluffton suddenly exploded for 5 runs to tie the score before heading into the bottom of the inning. The Pioneers were able to close out the game without going to extra innings, as a bunt from Murray was all they needed to bring Nunn home for the winning run. Murray's bunt to score the winning run was executed perfectly, as it dropped right in the dirt and the Beavers had no chance to stop Nunn from reaching home. The Pioneers took the win with a final score of 6-5.
Game 2- The second game of the doubleheader was off to a much different start, compared to how the last game had ended. The Pioneers took charge with 13 runs in the first two innings. Senter had once again gotten the first runs on the board, this time in stylish fashion as she hit a bomb of a two RBI homer to right-center field to get the Pios off to a 2-0 start. Transylvania added on five more runs before the end of the first. Emilie Teall ripped an RBI double to score Schuck, and Tharp took a hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Messing then brought two home with a single, and finally a Wulker sacrifice fly scored Tharp. After one, the score was 7-0.
The second inning was more of the same as the Pios tacked on six more runs on their total for the day. Transy got through two innings absolutely rolling with a 13-0 lead. After pitcher Marlee Woodward continued to hold the Beavers scoreless, two more Pioneers came home in the third, the to make it 15-0 lead going into the fifth. Zoey Fuller came in to close the game out as Transy only needed three more outs to take the game. Fuller made quick work, finding those three outs in four batters, and the Pioneers took the win convincingly.Â
Next up for the Transylvania softball team is a doubleheader against Spalding in Louisville, Kentucky. They play tomorrow, Sunday, May 1st at 1 & 3 PM.
