LEXINGTON - The Transylvania Women's Soccer team competed in their third game of the season, as they came home to the bluegrass following an undefeated weekend trip in Georgia. The Pioneers defeated Ogelthorpe (2-0) and Covenant (3-1) in their last two games as Maryville came to Lexington 2-0 themselves with both teams looking to stay out of the loss column. While this game would go the full 90 minutes, both teams would head home in a tie despite a heavily physical match where both teams showed opportunities to seal the game.
The First Half
In the first half the Pioneers started slow as freshman Sheridan Harrison continued her starting position in goal, facing multiple corner attempts in this first half action along with six shots that she was able to disrupt to keep the Pioneers even. The Pioneers were only able to get two shots up this half, which doesn't tell the whole story, as many runs were made by the Pioneers only to be thwarted by small mistakes. This half would end without a score but it was clear that both of these teams have the ability and that it would come down to who can mitigate the mistakes.
The Second Half
In the second half the Pioneers came out with the same energy as before but determined to generate more offense. Isabella White was the first Pioneer to get a shot off this half for Transy. Transylvania would double the amount of shots in the second half compared to the first. Not backing down, Maryville would go on the attack and try to sneak one past Harris but to no avail. Harrison finished the game with three saves. After 90 minutes of action, neither team could get the upper hand and both teams would end the match with a shutout, 0-0.
"Maryville had been our toughest opponent so far, so it was a great test for our team," Co-Head Coach Ashley Reinecke said. "This match has been great preparation for the tough competition ahead this season. We defended incredibly well, our back line and keeper were especially solid. It's a credit to them for keeping the clean sheet."
Despite the tie, Transylvania Women's soccer remains unbeaten as they look to defend Pat Deacon against Berea this weekend. The next game for the Pioneers is at 2:30PM here at home as Berea (0-3) look to get their first win of the season.
