Westfield, Ind. – The Transylvania baseball team battled the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans tightly through seven innings before the Titans took off late for a 9-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Grand Park.
Squaring off with the Titans in their second game of the 2018 season, the Pioneers input redshirt sophomore Austin Butts for his first career start on the mound. Playing in their first game of the season, the Titans got to Butts in the opening inning, leading off with three consecutive base hits to claim a 3-0 lead on Transylvania.
After the Titans' hitting string to open the game, Butts settled down, retiring three of the next four batters he faced to exit the inning. The sophomore enjoyed uneventful second and third innings, retiring the side in both frames before being replaced by sophomore pitcher Collin Johnson in the fourth inning.
The Pioneers locked down Oshkosh defensively, blanking the Titans in innings two through seven. Transylvania reached back in the bottom of the fourth to cut Oshkosh's lead to 3-1; Freshman infielder Wade Lopiccolo led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple, while Butts, serving as the designated hitter, drove in Lopiccolo with an RBI single into center field.
Senior infielder Taylor Henley followed with a single to move Butts to second, but the Pioneers could not issue any further damage to Oshkosh and the score by Lopiccolo served as the lone run of the day for Transylvania.
Oshkosh enjoyed a four-run inning in the eighth and tacked on two more runs in the ninth to pull away for the one-sided result. Butts took the loss in his first career start while Oshkosh's Colan Tremi collected the win.
Transylvania will conclude the weekend at Grand Park with a Sunday doubleheader, beginning at noon as the Pioneers face Wabash and rematch with Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 3:00 p.m.
