Atlanta, Ga. – Transylvania field hockey junior goalie Allyson Benz has been selected as the Southern Athletic Association Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Benz, a junior from Mason, Ohio (Mount Notre Dame HS), was a major factor in both of Transylvania's matches over the past week.
Benz recorded three saves in an exceptional 4-1 Pioneers victory over the Sewanee University Tigers on Monday, October 16, marking the first time in seven meetings that the Pioneers have defeated the Tigers.
Benz followed up the Monday performance with another high-volume showing, producing 11 saves in a 3-0 defeat on the road at Centre College on Friday, October 20. The game marked the tenth time this season that Benz has come up with six or more saves in a match.
The junior currently possesses 121 saves on the season, which leads the SAA in that category. Along with her conference-leading saves total, Benz has three shutouts in 2017 to her credit, and a save percentage of .796, which ranks third in the conference.
The player of the week award is the second of the season for Benz, and the second by a Transylvania field hockey player in the 2017 season. This is the third time Benz has won the award in her career.
Benz and the Pioneers return to the field tomorrow, October 24, to host the Eastern Mennonite University Royals at Pat Deacon Stadium in a non-conference matchup. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
