Lexington, Ky. – A scintillating season awaits the Transylvania men's basketball team in 2017-18, dotted with enriching nonconference matchups, a trip down south, a nod to tradition, and another grueling trek through the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule.
Transylvania men's basketball head coach Brian Lane unveiled on Thursday the official 2017-18 season schedule for the Pioneers, a blueprint for what the Pioneers hope will be an exceptional run.
"We have purposely ramped up our nonconference schedule to enhance our strength of schedule nationally," commented Lane.
The Pioneers will tip off the season with a fast-paced affair against Greenville University on Opening Night, Wednesday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Clive M. Beck Center in Lexington.
The matchup against Greenville marks the tail end of a two-year home-and-home agreement; both teams met last season in Greenville, a 125-109 run-and-gun result that went to the host Panthers.
Transylvania opens up the season aiming to return the favor to the Panthers in a game that should easily surpass triple digits in the scoring column for both sides. Greenville led Division III last year in scoring at 129.7 points per game.
"The opening game against Greenville could be one of the highest-scoring games in the history of the Beck Center so we are thinking about raising ticket prices," said a tongue-in-cheek Lane.
Transylvania continues its nonconference route through November with a pair of matchups against Bluegrass neighbors. Transylvania hosts archrival Centre College on Monday, November 20 at home in its annual pre-Thanksgiving Monday Night basketball showdown.
The Pioneers round out the month with a meeting at Thomas More College on Saturday, November 25. Transylvania defeated the Saints 85-82 last year in its season opener.
HCAC conference play begins in December with a slew of four conference matchups before the Pioneers return home on Wednesday, December 20 to host the two-day Don Lane Classic tournament. This year Transylvania will welcome Emory & Henry College, Guilford College, and North Park University to Lexington to usher in the Christmas week with a full spread of tournament basketball.
"Both teams we play in the Don Lane Classic have been in the NCAA Tournament and the trip to Emory's tournament should be just as challenging," added Lane.
Transylvania rounds out the nonconference schedule with a trip to Atlanta, Georgia, to take on Emory University in a two-day tournament format on December 28 and 29.
The Pioneers start off the new year with the HCAC slate in earnest as the Pioneers venture to Earlham College on Wednesday, January 3. A three-game road trip commences the month of February before the Pioneers wrap up season play with two consecutive home games, culminating in a Senior Day game against Anderson University on Saturday, February 17.
A hearty schedule awaits a Transylvania squad which forged a 17-10 overall record in 2016-17, finishing in the semifinals of the HCAC conference tournament.
