Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania men's basketball team will culminate the holiday procession by hosting the eighth-annual Don Lane Classic presented by Kentucky Health Administrators and eCoach on December 20-21 at the Clive M. Beck Center.
The pre-Christmas tournament this year features a compelling assortment of four teams as the Pioneers welcome the North Park University Vikings from Chicago, Illinois, the Guilford College Quakers from Greensboro, North Carolina, and the Emory and Henry College Wasps from Emory, Virginia for this Wednesday and Thursday's four-game set.
"We have had some of the best teams and coaches from across the country come to the Bluegrass right before Christmas for two days great days of basketball," said 17th-year Transylvania men's basketball head coach Brian Lane.
"The teams and coaches are treated in a first-class manner at this tournament and they all seem to enjoy being in downtown Lexington for a few days," added the son of the tournament's namesake, Don Lane, the legendary former head coach of Transylvania's men's basketball program.
This year's classic takes on a slightly different shape as all four games are predetermined. Guilford and North Park tip off the proceedings on Wednesday, December 20 at 5:00 p.m. and is followed by Transylvania vs. Emory & Henry at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday's nightcap features a matchup of two teams with a combined record of 13-1 in a key regional showdown between Transylvania and Emory & Henry.
Thursday's action begins at 3:00 p.m. as North Park takes on Emory & Henry. The Pioneers finish off the classic against Guilford at 5:00 p.m.
For the second straight year, the Don Lane Classic is presented by Kentucky Health Administrators and is joined by eCoach in 2017 as title sponsors.
"Kentucky Health Administrators and eCoach allow us to put on a first-class event," said Lane. "With their support, we are able to do all the extra things that make this tournament extra special. It is great to have Transylvania connections with both sponsors and are thankful that they recognize the enormous impact they have on our student-athletes."
Approaching the Don Lane Classic with a record of 6-1, the Pioneers aim to expand upon their best start in six seasons as they take on two high-performing squads from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in Guilford and Emory & Henry. "We have always tried to bring in some of the top-rated teams in the country so that we can see what we need to be prepared for nationally before we head into our conference schedule in January and February," analyzed Lane.
Tickets for this week's classic are $7 per two-game session, and two-day passes for the entire event are available on gameday at the Beck Center entry for $10. All four games will also be livestreamed on the Transy Sports Network (CLICK HERE).
Coach Brian Lane on this year's Don Lane Classic teams
Emory & Henry: "Emory & Henry come to the Don Lane Classic sporting a perfect 7-0 record and along with Guilford play in the ODAC, which is one of the top-rated conferences in the nation. They will pose an incredible challenge for our team as we approach the rest of our conference schedule next month."
Guilford: "They are an extremely well-coached team by Tom Palombo, a former HCAC coach at Defiance. Last we played Guilford, we took them to overtime in the first round of the NCAA Championship and they went onto the Final Four that season."
North Park: "Tom Slyder has done a remarkable job at North Park turning their program into a solid contender every year. He will be very familiar to Transylvania fans as he was Anderson University's high-successful basketball coach for almost a decade before moving on to North Park."
