Bluffton, Ohio – A late scoring burst by the Bluffton University Beavers doomed the Transylvania men's basketball team, which fell by the final score of 63-52 at the Sommer Center on Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Gabe Schmitt led the Pioneers with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range.
Joining Schmitt in double figures was sophomore forward Dominique Turner, who matched his career-high with 10 points in 18 minutes of action off the Pioneers' bench.
Transylvania appeared to take control of the game right from the tip, thanks to back-to-back buckets from Schmitt and sophomore forward Lucas Gentry in the opening two minutes of play.
Undeterred, the Beavers fought back and the two teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the half before Bluffton was able to secure a 28-25 advantage going into the halftime break.
The Beavers held their lead well into the second half until junior guard Spencer McKinney knocked down a pair of free throws to even the score at 41-41 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game.
However, the Pioneers were unable to retake the lead and the Beavers finished the game on an 11-2 run en route to the 63-52 final.
The loss drops Transylvania's record to 10-7 overall, and 7-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while the Beavers improve to 13-4 on the season and 7-3 in league play.
Up next, the Pioneers will host the Hanover College Panthers in a midweek HCAC showdown on Wednesday, January 23. Tipoff between the Panthers and the Pioneers is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Beck Center.
