Jekyll Island, Ga. – The Transylvania men's golf team competed in its first tournament play of the spring season this weekend, competing in the Jekyll Island Men's Invitational at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
Competing in a three-round affair from Friday through Sunday afternoon, the Pioneers carded a total team score of 913 to place 24th on the team leaderboard out of 30 teams. The Pioneers shot a round-low 301 in the first round on Friday and circled back closely to that mark on Sunday, firing a team score of 303.
Junior Jack Berger led the Pioneers with a three-round score of 224, shooting a round-best even 72 on Sunday after carding a 76 in each of the first two rounds. Berger finished in 54th place on the individual leaderboard. His weekend was highlighted by 10 birdies in three rounds of play.
Senior Carson Wattenbarger finished second among the Pioneers men's golfers with a three-day score of 227. Junior Blake Young and sophomore Jeb Brumley each fired scores of 235, while junior Zach Treilobs shot a 237 to round out the group. Treilobs, Wattenberger, and Brumley each had eight birdies for the weekend.
Transylvania is back in action on Friday, April 6 to face off against the Guilford College Quakers for two rounds of match play at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina. The site of competition also will serve as the site of this year's NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships.
