Greenwood, Ind. – Transylvania men's lacrosse sophomore midfielder T.J. Toivonen has been named the Ohio River Men's Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Toivonen, a sophomore from Sherwood, Oregon (Sherwood HS) turned in two stellar defensive performances as the Pioneers claimed pair of crucial ORLC victories this week.
The midfielder led the Pioneers with five caused turnovers, six ground balls, and scored a goal en route to a hotly contested 9-7 win at Hanover on Wednesday night.
The sophomore then tallied three ground balls and caused three turnovers in Transylvania's 12-4 victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon. Toivonen and his defensive unit held the Presidents to just eight shots on goal during the game.
This is the third award for Toivonen this season and the third player of the week award by a Transylvania men's lacrosse player this season.
The sophomore currently leads the ORLC with 44 caused turnovers and ranks third in the ORLC in total ground balls with 81.
Toivonen and Transylvania return to the field on Saturday, April 21 to face the Chatham University Cougars. Face-off between the Pioneers and the Cougars is set for 1:00 p.m. at Ellis Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
