Lexington, Ky. – Senior forward Riley Calhoon raised his season goal total to five in two games and the Transylvania men's soccer team raised its record to 2-0 with a 3-0 mastery of the Muskingum University Muskies Sunday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium.
For the second consecutive afternoon the Pioneers unleashed their full repertoire of depth, pushing the line forward on a regular basis to generate the first score of the day in the eighth minute; sophomore defender Jason Murillo thwacked a hard boot that careened off the gloves of the Muskingum keeper before the carom went squarely to Calhoon, who fired a straight vector into the net for 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers kept high pressure upon the Muskies for the majority of the afternoon before head coach Matt Vogel unleashed every end of his roster for the final 45 minutes.
The constant remained Calhoon's final touches as the forward scored again in the 21st minute for a 2-0 Transylvania lead and in the 55th minute for the hat trick. Like the first goal, Murillo factored heavily into the scoring as he claimed an assist on Calhoon's third and final goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Drew Grisham picked up the win, his second of the season as he split time efficiently with fellow sophomore goalie Chandler Gaunce. While the two combined to keep the net clean, the Transylvania backline did its part in seldom allowing Muskingum to mount a threatening push into the box.
Transylvania earned nine corner kicks to zero for Muskingum, and powered 26 total shots compared to two by the visiting Muskies to cap off an exceptional opening weekend at the Transy Soccer Showcase.
Next, the Pioneers will venture to Mount Berry Georgia for the Berry Invitational. On Saturday, the Pioneers will face off against Birmingham-Southern College before turning their attention to the host Berry University Vikings on Sunday afternoon.
