Transy Men’s Soccer announces incoming 2018 freshman class

Lexington, Ky. – The reigning champions of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference have furnished their storehouse with another vaunted class for the upcoming 2019 men's soccer season.

Transylvania men's soccer head coach Matt Vogel unveiled the Pioneers' incoming recruiting class on Tuesday, welcoming the class of 2022 to Lexington.

These 10 student-athletes will join a rising program which qualified for the NCAA Tournament this past fall for the first time in five seasons after ripping through the HCAC table on the way to a regular-season and conference tournament title.

"This recruiting class provides tremendous depth and will really compliment the returning squad this year," stated Vogel. "We are happy to bring in this new group and welcome them into the Pioneer soccer family.  We are excited to get them on campus soon as we prepare for our fall campaign."

The following players will be joining the program in the fall:


Birdsong dribbling

Name: Jak Birdsong

Hometown/High School: Cincinnati, Ohio / Lakota East High School

Club Team: CUP Gold

High School Honors: 3x All-Conference Academic, 2x First Team All-GMC, First Team All-Region, Second Team All-State

Coach Vogel on Birdsong: "Jak is a tremendous ball winner with a great skill set.  He is athletic and can play anywhere on the back line and can also play as a holding mid. He can distribute well, can handle pressure, and is a composed defender.  He comes from a strong club team which he captained that has a history of producing solid talent."


Jon Bloch action shot

Name: Jon Bloch

Hometown/High School: Fayetteville, Georgia / Whitewater High School

Club Team: KSA

High School Honors: 2018 All-Star, 3x All-County, 2x All-Region, Team MVP, Team Defensive MVP

Vogel on Bloch: "Jon is a versatile and athletic defender and midfielder.  He is a solid defender and very good going forward, especially as an outside back.  He can play anywhere on the back line and in midfield.  His experiences playing USDA Academy as a freshman and then with KSA will serve him well at the college level."


Name: Devin Craig

Hometown/High School: Frankfort, Kentucky / Montgomery County High School

High School Honors: First Team All-State, All-Region Team, First Team All-Academic

Club Team: Lexington FC

Vogel on Craig: "Devin is a dangerous attacking player who has tremendous pace.  He has a high work rate and is a threat with the ball at his feet or when being played in behind.  He has the ability to create chances out of nothing.  He is a prolific goal scorer and is used to playing against top competition."


Tyler Dobbs action

Name: Tyler Dobbs

Hometown/High School: Lexington, Kentucky / Lexington Christian Academy

Club Team: Lexington FC

High School Honors: 4x Academic All-State, 2x All-City Team, All-Region, All-A District Team, All-43rd District Team, Team MVP

Vogel on Dobbs: "Tyler is an athletic defender who is very good in 1v1 situations, and has the ability to get forward into the attack.  He also has the ability to play in central midfield and can be a driving threat when he gets the ball in the attack.  He is a true team player and is someone who makes teams better."


Name: Tyler Kenney

Hometown/High School: Richmond, Kentucky / Lexington Catholic

Club Team: Lexington FC

High School Honors: 2x All-State Team

Vogel on Kenney: "Tyler is a strong target player who is a goal scorer and potent finisher.  He is strong in holding the ball up, is good in linking play, and puts himself in great spots in the box to finish.  He's got good timing, he is good with his head and his feet, and has had a successful youth career playing against some of the top teams in the nation."

High School Honors: First Team All-OCC, 4x Big Walnut Scholar Athlete Award

Vogel on Kline: "Michael comes from a very successful club playing as a GK.  He has good hands, has a strong distribution set, and is a communicator defensively.  He reads the game very well and is a solid shot stopper.  He is an intelligent player who adds much needed goalkeeping depth to our team."

Vogel on Nusbacher: "Max is a versatile player with a skill set that can suit any position on the field. He is someone who is willing to do anything to help his team be successful.  He is a good defender in multiple positions and has the versatility to be good on the attack as well."

Vogel on Saylor: "Trent is an athletic attacking player with a diverse skill set.  He can create out wide and in central positions, can run in behind, and can score goals.  He can also play anywhere central midfield.  He is a person who makes those around him better and is a good fit for us here at Transy."


Name: Gabe Smallwood

Hometown/High School: Alexandria, Kentucky / Campbell County High School

Club Team: Kings Hammer

High School Honors: Northern KY All-Star, All-Region

Vogel on Smallwood: "Gabe is a big, athletic, strong, and mobile attacking player.  He has the ability to take multiple defenders on the dribble or can combine with others to create chances.  He scored a lot of goals at the high school level and even played for an alumnus of the program in Kyle Newman, so we know he was well coached."


Noah Wulfeck action

Name: Noah Wulfeck

Hometown/High School: Crescent Springs, Kentucky / Covington Catholic

High School Honors: First Team All-State, Team MVP, First Team All-Region, Colonel Cup All-Tournament Team, Region 9 All-Tournament Team, 35th District MVP, Team Captain Award

Vogel on Wulfeck: "Noah is a tall and skilled midfielder.  He has the height that can hurt teams on set pieces and makes him effective defensively in the air.  He can create with his feet and has the vision to find players in space.  He has an effective way of being able to build attacks and create chances."
