Terre Haute, Ind. – The Transylvania swimming team prepares to dive into history this weekend as the inaugural Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships get underway at the Vigo County Aquatic Center on February 9-11.
Taking part along with five other participating conference teams, this year's 2018 HCAC Swimming and Diving Championships is the first ever sponsored by the conference. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology hosts the three-day event which runs Friday through Sunday in Terre Haute.
"It's exciting to be a part of something that's happening for the first time in its history," commented Transylvania swimming head coach Dave Doolin of the inaugural event. "We have had a great season and excelled from the start of the season and have continued to improve all the way through the season, which is exciting for me."
Admission to this weekend's championships is $10 per day or $25 for the entire three-day session. Each daily slate contains a 10:00 a.m. prelims and 4:00 p.m. finals session and the daily admission is good for both sessions.
Friday's first day of action at the Vigo County Aquatic Center features the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley races. Sophomore Mattie Fogle will compete in the 500 freestyle event sophomore Sarah Haerle and senior Kiali Jelinek will partake in the women's 200 individual medley. On the men's side, freshman Drew Dodds leads the charge in the men's 200 individual medley.
On Saturday, Jelinek and senior Elizabeth Lewis compete in the women's 100 butterfly event, while senior Zak Griffis and freshman Noah Collins lead the way for the men in their respective 100 butterfly races. Other races of note on Saturday include the 200 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke, and the 100 backstroke.
The action concludes Sunday as the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, and 200 butterfly races are held. Sunday's finals will begin at 5:00 p.m. following a 4:00 p.m. Senior Recognition Ceremony.
