Nicholasville, Ky. – The Transylvania men's tennis team debuted a fresh new facility on Tuesday afternoon, where they fell to the Thomas More Saints, 8-1 in a nonconference match at the Top Seed Tennis Club.
Playing at the Lexington metropolitan's newest tennis facility which opened just days before, the Pioneers welcomed Thomas More from Northern Kentucky down to the Bluegrass to square off with the Saints at the 12-court facility.
Thomas More looked steady on the road as the Saints swept all three doubles matches; seniors Luke Groene and Eric Sandknop took on Derrick Kwok and Jared Haught in the No. 1 doubles matchup. The two Transy seniors fought the Saints peers closely before taking an 8-5 loss.
In singles play, Thomas More wrapped up five of six matches. The Pioneers seized a sizable victory in No. 1 singles, where Groene bounced back to beat Kwok 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets. In No. 5 singles, sophomore Edis Sinanovic gave Wes Smith a strong run in the second set before falling 6-4, 7-5.
Transylvania returns to play this weekend as the Pioneers hit the road for three consecutive matches. On Saturday, March 24, Transylvania visits Ohio Wesleyan for a 10:00 a.m. match followed by an 11:00 a.m. match against Otterbein on Sunday, March 25.
