Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania softball team, three-time reigning regular season champions of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, has again been tabbed as the favorite to take the conference crown in the 2019 installment of the HCAC preseason coaches' poll.
The annual poll, released on Thursday, slotted the Pioneers in the first-place spot. The poll is based on a voting survey of the conference's nine coaches.
The Pioneers received 81 of a possible 90 voting points and seven of nine first-place votes. Trailing Transylvania was Mount St. Joseph, which came in second on the preseason poll with 74 points and collected the other two first-place votes, and Franklin in third; the Grizzlies won the 2018 HCAC Tournament championship in an abbreviated format.
The Pioneers are coming off a 34-9 season in 2018. Transylvania took first place last year with a record of 14-2, winning by three games over second-place Franklin. The Pioneers secured consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history last year by clinching an at-large berth into the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
Transylvania begins its 2019 season on Saturday, March 2 as the Pioneers host the Pio Classic at Hall Field in Lexington. The Pioneers square off with Thomas More College at 12:30 p.m. and Case Western Reserve at 3:00 p.m.
