Transylvania WBB opens up HCAC Semifinals on Friday in Terre Haute

Lexington, Ky. – With another 20-win regular season in the rear-view mirror, the Transylvania women's basketball turns its attention to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals this Friday, February 23 on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The six-team HCAC tournament will determine the automatic bid out of the HCAC for the 64-team NCAA Tournament which begins on Friday, March 2.

The HCAC Tournament begins on Tuesday with two first-round games, followed by the semifinals and championship game at the site of No. 1 seed Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Indiana; following Tuesday's first-round contests at No. 4 seed Hanover and No. 3 seed Bluffton, the conference semifinals will take place on Friday night.

Friday's women's semifinals begin at 6:30 p.m. as Rose-Hulman faces the winner of Earlham-Hanover, followed by the 8:30 p.m. matchup between Transylvania and the winner of Mount St. Joseph-Bluffton. The HCAC Championship game tips off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24 at Rose-Hulman's Hulbert Arena.

Last Saturday, the Pioneers completed a 20-5 regular season and a 15-3 run through HCAC play to earn the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

In two regular-season meetings, the Pioneers defeated Bluffton 64-59 on the road on January 2 and 73-59 in Lexington on January 20.  Transylvania also swept a pair of games with Mount St. Joseph, winning 65-43 in Cincinnati on January 10, and then again at home by the score of 77-49 on February 7.

Transylvania is led by senior forward Rachel Cox, who paces the Pioneers in scoring with 15.2 points per game while shooting 40 percent from three-point range this season. Cox is also a dominant force defensively, ranking first in the HCAC in blocked shots with 2.9 blocks per game.

Sophomore guard Shelby Boyle is second on the team in scoring with an average of 12.2 points per game to go along with a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game. Boyle has tallied seven double-doubles on the season.

Transylvania is currently ranked fifth in the nation in blocks with a mark of 6.5 blocks per game. The Pioneers have also been clutch from the free throw line this season as the team is shooting a combined 79.6 percent, the best percentage in all of Division III.

Admission to Saturday's HCAC Semifinal game is $8 for adults, and free for children aged 3 and under. HCAC-affiliated faculty, students, and staff with school ID will be admitted for free. Access the official tournament website for all the latest tournament news and info.
