Greenwood, Ind. – Transylvania volleyball senior libero Marissa Coutinho has been chosen as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for volleyball, the conference announced Monday.
Monday's announcement marks the second time in the 2017 season that the senior has won player of the week honors.
Coutinho, a senior from Terre Haute, Indiana (Terre Haute South Vigo) keyed a 2-1 week for the Pioneers as they evened their record to 2-2 in HCAC play. In three matches elapsing 12 sets, Coutinho collected 74 digs, including a week-best 35 digs in a 3-2 Wednesday loss to Hanover at home.
Coutinho's defense was clutch in two road victories for the Pioneers this weekend as she added a match-high 19 digs in a three-set sweep of Anderson. Coutinho also thrust a career-high six aces in the victory while leading a charge that resulted in 22 Anderson errors.
In Sunday's four-set victory at Manchester, Coutinho again set the pace in digs with 20, adding seven assists as well. Coutinho and the Pioneers held Manchester to sub-.100 attacking percentages in two of the four sets.
Coutinho sealed up the second player of the week award for a Pioneer in the 2017 season, and for the fourth time in her career.
Coutinho and the Pioneers continue their HCAC schedule on Wednesday, October 11 as they visit Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. The Pioneers and Quakers square off at 7:30 p.m.
