Franklin, Ind. – The Transylvania women's road crusade through the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference continued Wednesday evening with a 5-1 defeat against the Franklin College Grizzlies at Faught Stadium.
An early three-goal burst by Franklin put the home team ahead early. The Grizzlies went ahead 1-0 in the third minute as the Pioneers were unable to clear the ball in their back third. Franklin recovered possession and Rachel Hawkins knocked in the first goal of the night.
Franklin got on the board twice more in the first 12 minutes of the contest to take a 3-0 advantage after a through ball from Maddie Fleet.
The Pioneers responded in kind in the 21st minute, as junior forward Parrish Chew set up junior midfielder Cecilia Walton for the first strike of the game for Transylvania. The goal was Walton's third of the season, second-most on the Pioneers.
But Franklin got back on the board early in the second half as Fleet notched her second goal of the night in the 55th minute, and did so once more in the 85th minute for the 5-1 final.
Junior goalkeeper Haley Blackburn provided six saves on the night for the Pioneers in defeat; Transylvania's record dropped to 5-8-2 overall, and 3-3 in conference play.
The Pioneers aim to rebound on Saturday, October 21 as they visit the Anderson University Ravens in Anderson, Indiana. First touch is set for 1:00 p.m. at the AU Soccer Fields.
