Transylvania women's soccer wins big against Defiance on Senior Day

Defiance 0 Transy 8

Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania women's soccer team's offense was clicking on all cylinders Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Defiance College Yellow Jackets at Pat Deacon Stadium.

Transylvania began the afternoon with a senior day ceremony as the Pioneers acknowledged six seniors: goalie Ally Barfield, goalie Haley Blackburn, midfielder Noel Obata, midfielder Cecilia Walton, striker Brenna D'Amico, and midfielder Gabby Prevost.

Barfield continued her celebration into gameplay, picking up her fifth victory of the season by recording one save while allowing no goals in the complete-game shutout. Barfield has yet to allow a goal this season in 475 minutes of action.

The Pioneers took control right from the start when freshman midfielder Abby Baker scored off a pass from Obata, putting Transylvania ahead 1-0 less than two minutes into the game. Baker now leads the team with eight goals on the season.

In the sixth minute, freshmen forwards Ashley Chindo and Tori Nordin connected to double the Pioneers' lead at 2-0.

Less than 10 minutes later, Chindo drove the ball towards goal and poked a shot past the Yellow Jackets goalie for Transylvania's third goal of the day.

The two teams settled in and the score remained unchanged until the 35th minute when sophomore forward Casey Hite chipped a shot over the Defiance goalie and into the back of the net. D'Amico provided the assist on Hite's goal, which was the sophomore's first of the season.

Transylvania's offensive prowess continued well into the second half, as the Pioneers tacked on four additional goals courtesy of freshman defender Nikki Wells and freshman forward Bailey Wood, and sophomore midfielder Emilie Yates, pushing the final score to 8-0 in favor of the Pioneers.

The victory was Transylvania's twelfth shutout of the season, and improves the Pioneers' record to 10-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-12 overall and 1-4 in HCAC play.

Up next, the Pioneers will travel to Hanover, Indiana on Wednesday, October 17 for a showdown with the Hanover College Panthers. The match is set for a 3:30 p.m. start at the Hanover Soccer Complex
