Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania swimming team competed in the first of two meets within the span of 24 hours this weekend with a home meet against the Franklin College Grizzlies Friday evening at the William T. Young Center.
The Pioneers hosted the Grizzlies in the first dual meet of the year between Transylvania and an HCAC opponent. Friday's event also marked the first HCAC dual meet between Transy and a conference opponent since the announcement of a new HCAC conference tournament for the six participating swimming and diving squads in the HCAC.
Franklin claimed victories on both the women's and men's sides for a combined total of 321-58.
While the Grizzlies left William T. Young Center victorious, the Pioneers fielded a couple of impressive wins. Sophomore Sarah Haerle claimed a first-place finish in the women's 200 breaststroke, touching the wall more than four seconds ahead of the next-closest finisher. Haerle also came up just shy of a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley, finishing less than one second behind Cady Mehringer to finish in second.
Freshman Drew Dodds picked up another individual win in the men's 200 individual medley, touching the wall in 2:04.41 to finish nearly four seconds ahead of the race's runner-up. The freshman finished just 14 one-hundredths of a second behind Franklin's Jack Helm in the 200 breaststroke to take second place.
Transylvania faces a quick turnaround as it hits the water again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the William T. Young Center, hosting Sewanee: University of the South.
