Terre Haute, Ind. – The Transylvania swimming and diving team's 2018-2019 season will crest this weekend with the final scheduled event of the year, the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Vigo County Aquatic Center running February 14-16.
Transylvania will join Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the weekend's host, along with conference members Franklin College, Anderson University, Manchester University, and Hanover College for the second-annual conference championships. With the addition of Hanover this year, swimming and diving is now a fully-sponsored HCAC sport for the first time this season.
Admission for the event is $10 per day or $25 for all three daily sessions. Each daily session begins at 10:00 a.m. with preliminary races, followed by 6:00 p.m. finals session on Thursday and Friday evening, and a 5:00 p.m. finals session on Saturday.
Thursday's Day 1 action will be highlighted by the women's and men's 500 freestyle races, the women's and men's 200 individual medleys, and the women's and men's 50 freestyles. Junior Mattie Fogle has paced the competition for the Pioneers in the women's 500 freestyle all season with her 5:26.70 time at last December's Transylvania Invitational setting the bar.
In Friday's Day 2 races, the Pioneers put a plethora of swimmers in the water as the 400 IM races, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke races for both women's and men's highlight the day.
Sophomore Drew Dodds sports the fourth-best time in the HCAC this season in the men's 100 breaststroke (58.79) and will aim to best that performance on Friday's championship stage. At last year's championships, Dodds took third place in the event. Dodds also possesses the fourth-best time in the men's 100 butterfly (51.89) and takes aim at an individual title in that race.
Junior Sarah Haerle prepares to defend her 2018 conference title in the women's 100 breaststroke on Friday. Sophomore Emma Lloyd holds the top time among Pioneers this season in the women's 100 backstroke (1:02.95) as the Pioneers look to post another top-three finish at the HCAC Championships.
The weekend is punctuated in Saturday's Day 3 races with the men's and women's 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and 1650 freestyle events.
The final day of action offers more opportunities for Pioneers to shine in their respective areas of specialization; Haerle, a three-time HCAC player of the week award-winner in 2018-19, boasts the top time in the HCAC this season in the women's 200 breaststroke (2:26.17). Freshman Lindsey Seaton aims to complete a solid freshman campaign as the owner of Transylvania's top time in the women's 100 freestyle (55.29), which also serves as the fifth-fastest time among HCAC swimmers in 2019.
Prior to Saturday's 5:00 p.m. Finals session, the conference will hold its annual ceremony to honor senior swimmers from all six programs in a 4:00 p.m. senior recognition.
Live stats will be provided for all of the weekend's events, beginning with Thursday morning's action at Vigo County Aquatic Center.
