Pioneers split on their first night at Kenyon College Invitational

Gambier, Ohio – On the road for the second straight weekend to begin its season, the Transylvania volleyball team produced a split in its Friday evening twin battles, losing to the Otterbein University Cardinals in four sets before responding against the La Roche College Redhawks to win in four.

In the evening opener, Otterbein dealt the Pioneers a four-set defeat, its first loss of the season. With virtually no time to reflect on such a result, the Pioneers turned around immediately in their following match against La Roche to come away with a 25-14, 25-10, 24-26, 25-13 victory.

Participating in the Kenyon College Invitational, the Pioneers started the weekend 1-1 to bring their season record to 5-1.

In game one of the evening, the Pioneers pushed back and forth against Otterbein to wage a close four-set loss. The Cardinals issued an early blow in the first set, winning 25-21. Again the Cardinals snuck by the Pioneers by the thinnest of margins in the second set with a 25-23 victory. Transylvania blazed to a 25-17 victory in the third set, but Otterbein found more juice towards the end, closing out the match with a 25-17 fourth set win.

Sophomore right side hitter Jordan Horne led the way against Otterbein with 13 kills, two blocks, and a .300 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Hannah Talkers and senior libero Marissa Coutinho each provided 14 digs apiece.

In the nightcap, Transylvania answered back against La Roche, seemingly taking out their frustrations on the Red Hawks after the first result of the night was not to their liking. The Pioneers took control of the match from the outset with a 25-14 win in the first set. Their mastery of the contest was even more apparent in the second set as Transy won 25-10.

La Roche issued its big output in the third set, squeezing by Transylvania 26-24. But the Pioneers returned to its dominant ways in set four with a 25-13 victory.

The Pioneers return to the court one more time at Kenyon to take on the host team, the Kenyon College Ladies at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
