Greenwood, Ind. – Transylvania women's volleyball libero Marissa Coutinho has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for women's volleyball, the conference announced Monday.
Coutinho, a senior from Terre Haute, Indiana (Terre Haute South Vigo), led the Transylvania backline this past weekend at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational as the Pioneers went 2-1.
The senior provided a total of 63 digs over the three matches (10 sets in all) along with one ace. In Friday's four-set win against Adrian College, the Pioneers forced the Bulldogs into 35 total errors and a negative hitting percentage in the second set. Coutinho had a weekend-best 32 digs in that contest.
In the Pioneers' other win of the weekend, a three-set rout of Grove City College on Saturday afternoon, Coutinho had a team-high 18 digs as the Pioneers forced Grove City into 23 errors and negative overall hitting percentages in the second and third sets.
Coutinho currently ranks seventh in the HCAC in digs and 18th in assists.
This is the first HCAC Player of the Week award for Coutinho of the 2017 season, and the third time in her career she has taken such honors after winning the award twice in the 2016 campaign. It is also the first HCAC Player of the Week award won by a Pioneer volleyball player this season.
Coutinho and the Pioneers open up play at home tomorrow, at 7:00 p.m. as Transylvania hosts Centre College at the Beck Center.
