Greenwood, Ind. – Two members of the Transylvania volleyball team have earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards for the week ending October 14, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Junior libero Abby Wills (Waddy, Ky. / Shelby County HS) has been named the HCAC Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore middle blocker Ellie Stigger (Louisville, Ky. / Sacred Heart Academy) has been selected as the HCAC Offensive Player of the Week for leading the Pioneers to a pair of match victories against HCAC opponents this past week.
Stigger's week was highlighted by a four-set win at Bluffton University on Sunday. Stigger registered a career-high 21 kills in just four sets as the Pioneers knocked off Bluffton, which was previously undefeated in conference play. In a second-set juncture during which the Pioneers erased a five-point deficit to win the set, Stigger had a string of three consecutive kills to help turn the tide against the Beavers as Transylvania won the final three sets of the afternoon.
The sophomore had a powerful week overall as Stigger put together a .453 hitting percentage for the entire week as the Pioneers won over Bluffton on Sunday and swept Defiance College the previous Wednesday. In Wednesday's sweep of Defiance, Stigger had 13 kills to just one error as the Pioneers continued to extend their season-high winning streak to five matches.
Wills had a significant defensive impact in those pair of wins for the Pioneers. The junior led the Pioneers in digs in both victories this past week, including a match-high 29 digs in the four-set win Sunday at Bluffton. Her 29 digs were the second-most amount of individual digs in a match for Wills, and her highest amount in any match this season that was less than five sets. Wills totaled eight assists on the week.
It is the first HCAC player of the week award for both players and the second and third awards collected by a Transylvania volleyball player in the 2018 season (Jordan Horne, Offensive Player of the Week, October 1).
Transylvania continues its schedule on Wednesday, October 17, welcoming conference rival Mount St. Joseph University to Lexington. The Pioneers host Mount St. Joseph at 7:00 p.m at the Clive M. Beck Center.
