Olivia Akridge (Eddyville, Ky.)and
Holly Milburn (Georgetown, Ky.)led Transylvania's first-half comeback Saturday and the Pioneers hung on for a 54-51 win in Heartland Conference women's basketball action.
Transy is 5-3 overall, 2-2 in HCAC play, while the Engineers are 3-4, 2-2 HCAC.
Akridge finished the game with 14 points four rebounds and five assists. Holly Milburn totaled 12 points with eight rebounds, seven of those offensive.
After trailing by as many as nine points in the first half, the Pioneers rallied in the second to lead by as many as seven. Transy took the lead for good with 11:25 remaining in the second half when Shayla Black (Mooresville, Ind.) dropped in a layup to make the score 42-40. A pair of Angel Lucas (Elizabethtown, Ky.)free throws at the six minute mark gave the Pioneers a seven point lead.
Alisa Dickerson topped the Rose-Hulman scoring column with 13 points and three rebounds before she fouled out. The Engineers were a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, while the Pioneers shot just 50 percent ( 6 of 12).
The Pioneers forced the visitors into 29 turnovers while committing just 11, leading to a 20-11 advantage in points off miscues.
After being down by nine, Transy entered the locker room tied with Rose-Hulman 26-26 at the end of the first period, scoring the last nine points of the half. The run became 11 straight when Transy scored the first bucket of the second half as well.
Akridge led the Pioneers with eight first half points. Charli Fant (Glasgow, Ky.)followed with 7 points, and Milburn tallied six poitns and five rebounds.
Donna Marsh led the Engineers with eight first half points. Rose-Hulman shot 50 percent in the first half while holding the Pioneers to just 29.4 percent.
After a week off for finals, the Pioneers are back in action in their Holiday Classic on Dec. 18-19. Transy faces Muskingum on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m., followed by the matchup between Centre and Baldwin-Wallace. On Dec. 19, the Pioneers play Baldwin-Wallace at 3 p.m. in the second game of the day.
