LEXINGTON, Ky. - No. 15 Franklin never led by more than a dozen points Wednesday, but was able to hang on to defeat Transylvania 67-59 in women's Heartland Conference basketball action at the Beck Center.
The Pioneers are 8-10, 6-5 HCAC after seeing their three-game win streak end. The conference co-leading Grizzlies are 17-1, 10-1 HCAC.
Nicole Coffman led Transy with 17 points and
Terra Lucas added 15.
Jariana Gillespie tallied 11 for the Pioneers. Sarah Condra poured in 26 to top the Grizzlies. She also had nine rebounds as the visitors had a 47-39 edge on the boards.
Alex McKenzie was Transy's best glass-cleaner with 10 rebounds.
Transy held the Grizzlies to 39 percent shooting (12 of 31) in the first half and trailed by just six, 38-32, at intermission. Lucas led the was with 12 points ahile Coffman had eight and Gillespie seven. The Pioneers were 12 of 33 from the field for 36 percent, but were outscored 11-6 at the charity stripe.
Franklin led by as many as nine late in the period. Condra paced the visitors with 17 first-half points, but no one else had more than six.
Transy finished the game shooting 32 percent for the game after cooling to jujst 27 percent (eight of 29) in the second half. Franklin shot 41 percent in the second half and 40 percent (22 of 55) overall. Franklin was 18 of 26 at the line while Transy was just 15 of 31.
Transy is back in action on Saturday when its hosts Defiance in a 1 p.m. matchup at the Beck Center.
