Grizzlies belt Pioneers in HCAC semifinals

Box Score FRANKLIN, Ind. - Top-seeded and 15th-ranked Franklin hit Transylvania with a 37-14 first-half run Saturday and went on to a 67-45 victory in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

Transy finishes its season with a 14-13 record, head coach Greg Todd's sixth consecutive winning record, while Franklin advances to the championship contest with a mark of 24-2.

As they have for most of the season, a pair of first-year players led the Pioneers. Guard Nicole Coffman had 14 points to go with four rebounds and two assists, while Alex McKenzie just missed her third straight double double, finishing with 10 points and six boards. Another freshman, Chelsea Pharris, came off the bench to score eight points and grab three rebounds.

Sarah Condra led three Franklin players in double figures with 13 points.

Transy hit only four of 23 first-half shotsto fall behind by by 23. The Pioneers outscored the home team 31-30 in the second half.

Franklin shot 38 percent in the first half and 41 percent for the game while Transy finished at 27.5 percent.

Transy was hurt by 20 turnovers, compared to 13 for Franklin, which held a 21-8 edge in scoring off miscues. Franklin's bench also had a 24-15 margin over Transy's.

Transy had no seniors on this year's squad, so Todd will return every player that helped the program finish fourth in the HCAC. Included in that group are nine first-year players.
