LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania women's basketball fell just short of a comeback in their second loss of the season Wednesday night, falling to the Frankling Grizzlies 91-83.ÂÂ
On a night where the Transylvania women had a chance at setting an all-time program win streak, the Pioneers faced a team that stymied their usual ball movement and shared scoring, resulting in the loss.
"Our girls didn't quit tonight and I was proud of their effort," said Head Coach Greg Todd. "But, you have to give Franklin a lot of credit. They were very focused and played relaxed."
The game started out similar to others as the Pioneers sat on an 18-9 lead early. Despite the lead, Franklin came back quick, sinking multiple 3-point shots that found them in a 29-28 advantage.
In the final minutes of the first half, sophomore guard
Katelyn Smith took over, hitting important three pointers to keep Transylvania within reach. Smith was one of the few Pioneer scorers who was consistently hitting her mark in the first half and finished the half with 22 of her total 28 points. Smith also tallied three rebounds and three assists in the game.
The second half was largely in favor of Franklin where the score tied twice but never leaned Transylvania's way. Franklin's success was in large part due to their free throw shooting and ability to get to the line to make 21 of their 25 free throws in the second half alone.
In the final minutes, Transylvania trailed by as much as 17, but through veteran leadership and big shot making ability, the deficit was trimmed to as little as six with 30.2 seconds remaining. The costly fouls and slow-paced offensive possessions by Franklin ultimately ran the clock down to where Transylvania couldn't have enough offensive possessions to win the game.
Leading the Pioneers in scoring was Smith with 28 points followed closely by junior guard
Nicole Coffman who scored 19 points with four assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Coffman now sits eight points shy of becoming No. 10 on the all-time scoring list.
Junior forward
Alex McKenzie also played well scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds in only 22 minutes of action. In addition to these players was junior guard
Madisen Webb who posted an impressive stat line of seven points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
The Pioneers play again on Saturday, January 25
th when they face off at Rose-Hulman.ÂÂ
