Pioneers roll to 73-60 win over Spalding

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—On-target shooting helped No. 25 Transylvania roll to a 73-60 win over Spalding University Tuesday at Derek Smith Gymnasium.

Transylvania finished 8-for-17 (47%) from behind-the-arc, while limiting the Golden Eagles to 4-for-23 from downtown.

The Pioneer offense connected on three straight three-pointers to open the game, taking an early 9-0 lead. Senior guard Nicole Coffman drained back-to-back long balls less than two minutes into the game, before junior guard Katelyn Smith added another to give visiting Transylvania early momentum.

"Our team started the game with good intensity and brought a lot of energy to set the tone early," head coach Juli Fulks said.

After building a 23-8 lead the Pioneer offense, however, stalled briefly as the Golden Eagles narrowed the lead to four. Two free throws from sophomore Jordin Fender extended the Pioneer lead back to six with 5:44 left to play in the first half. Following a Transylvania timeout, Smith drilled another three-point basket giving the Pioneers a nine point lead, but Spalding did not let up.

Four straight trips to the line allowed the Golden Eagles to close in on the Pioneer lead pulling within four, 33-29. The Pioneers responded with a late 7-0 run in the first half extending the lead back to 11 taking a 42-33 lead at the break.

Transylvania opened the second half with an 11-4 run with buckets inside from senior center Kayla Dobson and senior forward Alex McKenzie, along with another three-pointer from Coffman. Holding a 58-49 lead, a jumper from Coffman sparked yet another Pioneer run. Transylvania outscored the Golden Eagles 11-0 over the next 4:45, as senior Elizabeth Thomas found the net on consecutive trips down the floor giving the Pioneers their largest lead of the game, 69-49.

The Pioneers held off a late surge from the Golden Eagles to pick up their second win of the season. Smith led all scorers with a game-high 24 points, along with five rebounds and four assists finishing 2-for-3 in 3PFG.  Meanwhile, Coffman added 19 points on 4-for-5 shooting from beyond-the-arc and three assists.

"I thought we took steps forward on both offense and defense in executing a game plan for 40 minutes," Fulks said.

Transylvania tallied 19 assists on 32 made field goals in the win, while pulling down 41 rebounds to 28 by the Golden Eagles.

Transylvania returns to action Friday against Covenant at the Clive M. Beck Center. Friday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
