Centre takes the series with 5-0 win over Pioneers

DANVILLE, Ky.—Three goals in the second half helped Centre College sweep the series over the Transylvania University field hockey team with a 5-0 win Wednesday.

The two Southern Athletic Association opponents squared off in their second match in eight days, as the Pioneers looked to even the series at one apiece.

Wednesday's match mirrored that of the first match-up, as the Sara Aschbacher and the Pioneer defense limited the potent Colonels' offense in the first half.

Centre's Julie Gates, the conference's leading scorer, struck first for the Colonels less than three minutes into play. Gates netted both Centre goals in last week's 2-0 win over the Pioneers.

The Colonels added another goal near the mid-way point of the first half to extend their lead to 2-0 before the break.

With 24:03 left to play, Centre's Erin Keifer added her first of two goals of the second half. Keifer scored again with just over six minutes left to play to give the Colonels a 4-1 nod, before the final goal came with just over three minutes showing on the clock.

"Overall, we played well," head coach Sarah Humphries said. "I think we started to get a little fatigued in the second half. Macaulay Schifferdecker was great on both ends of the field. It was the best she's played this season."

The Pioneers (1-6, 0-2) have a few days to prepare, as SAA foe Sewanee (2-4, 1-1) comes to Pat Deacon Stadium Sunday. The match is slated for noon.

"We know what we have to fix for Sewanee," Humphries said.
