Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio—Despite a strong second half, the Transylvania University field hockey team fell to Denison University on Friday night.
The Pioneers held the Big Red scoreless for more than 25 minutes to start the second half, as the defense responded to head coach Sarah Humphries halftime adjustments. "The second half represented what Transy field hockey is all about," said Humphries.
Transylvania drew blood early in the final period on a goal from senior midfielder Kayla Thurlow in the 54th minute with a backhanded shot from the edge of the circle. Humphries described the score as a "beautiful" effort.
Thurlow's goal capped a flurry of shots from Transylvania to open the half. Freshman Alyson Bergman pushed a shot wide at the 50:38 mark while sophomore Jessica Chandler and Bergman put shots on goal in the 52nd and 54th minutes respectively.
In the second half the Pioneers held Denison to just six shots, while taking six themselves, including four on target. Freshman Sidney Lococo made her first collegiate appearance in goal, recording three saves on four shots on goal in the contest.
The competitive period was not enough, however, as the Big Red built an insurmountable lead in the first 35 minutes of the game. Denison scored six goals in the opening frame to take a 6-0 lead into the intermission.
Transylvania (0-6, 0-4 SAA) takes the field again on Oct. 10 with a road contest against Bethany before returning to Southern Athletic Association play on Oct. 11 against Sewanee.
