Ward, Meredith and Harrison lead Pioneers to 11-6 win over Hanover in first conference matchup

Box Score

HANOVER, Ind.—In its first Ohio River Women's Lacrosse Conference matchup, three Pioneers netted multiple goals to lead the Transylvania University women's lacrosse team over the home standing Hanover College Panthers, 11-6, Tuesday at Alumni Stadium.

Julia Ward tallied four goals, while Lucy Meredith and Rachel Harrison added three goals each. Iyabo Erinkitola also logged a goal in the win for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers wasted no time, as Meredith put Transylvania up 1-0 with a goal less than three minutes into play. After winning the opening draw control, the Pioneers threatened before the Meredith goal.

Hanover, however, answered with a goal minutes later to tie the game at one, but Meredith added her second goal with 21:34 left to play in the first half helping the Pioneers regain the lead. The Panthers found the net to tie the game at two, but the Pioneers landed three unanswered goals to build a 5-2 lead.

A sound defensive play from Jessica Chandler forced the Hanover turnover allowing Erinkitola to score the go-ahead goal with 17:48 left in the first half. Minutes later, Harrison scooped a groundball as the Pioneers looked to add to their lead. A Hanover foul gave Transylvania a free position shot and Ward capitalized with a goal as 11:22 showed on the clock to give the Pioneers a 4-2 lead.

As time wound down in the first half, a timely save from Transylvania goalkeeper Lydia Shaughnessy led to another offensive possession as Harrison gave the Pioneers a 5-2 advantage with 1:52 to play.

Seconds after Hanover scored to narrow the Transylvania lead back to two, Harrison added her second goal of the night converting on a free position shot to give the Pioneers a 6-3 lead at the break.

The Pioneer offense kept the momentum in the second half, as Harrison, Ward and Meredith scored in the opening minutes of the second half to put the Pioneers up six, 9-3.

After Hanover added two goals over the next 15 minutes, Ward, again, converted on a free position shot extending the Pioneer lead back to five. The teams traded goals in the closing minutes as the Pioneers picked up its first ORWLC win in program history in its first attempt.

The 2015 season marks the inaugural season for the conference after 10 teams from the President's Athletic Conference and the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference merged.

With the win, the Pioneers moved to 2-3 (1-0 ORWLC) on the season. Transylvania hosts Thiel College Friday in another conference matchup. Live video and live stats for Friday's game can be found here.
