Women's lacrosse picks up dominating win over Franklin, 17-5

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky.—A dominating performance by the Transylvania women's lacrosse team gave them their fourth straight Ohio River Lacrosse Conference win as they beat the Franklin Grizzlies 17-5. The 17 goals scored by the Pioneers were a season-high for the team.

Transy went on a tear to open the game, outscoring the Grizzlies 5-0 in the first 15 minutes of the game. After several missed scoring opportunities in the early going, attacker Lucy Meredith got Transylvania on the board at the 23:54 mark to make the score 1-0.

After Meredith's goal, attacker Julia Ward scored two straight for the Pioneers, netting scores with 19:50 and 18:29 to play in the opening period. Defender Jessica Chandler was next in scoring for the Pioneers, taking a pass from attacker Eden Yeiser and beating the Franklin goalkeeper to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Pioneers. Less than three minutes later, midfielder Iyabo Erinkitola found the back of the net to put Transy on top 5-0.

Franklin cut into the lead briefly, scoring one goal before midfielder Jessica Bier pushed the lead back to five with a goal with just under 13 to play in the half. Franklin got another back at the 13:37 mark but the Pioneers closed the half on another 5-0 run to take an 11-2 lead into the intermission.

Erinkitola got on the board again to open the second half to extend the Transylvania lead to 10. After a Franklin goal, Meredith scored two straight goals for the Pioneers in three minutes, giving Transy a comfortable 13-3 lead. Bier scored her second goal of the game with 13:38 to play to give Transylvania a 15-4 lead. Defender Liz Thomas was pushed into the attacking area in the closing minutes and with under 12 to play, scored the first goal of her senior season. Bier got on the board for a third time just minutes later and put the Pioneers ahead 17-4.

Ward scored a season-high five goals on seven shots to lead the Pioneers in scoring. Bier and Meredith each added three while Erinkitola and Chandler posted two goals each. Reigning ORLC Offensive Player of the Week Rachel Harrison dished out two of the four Transy assists in the game and added a goal of her own while also picking up six ground balls, winning two draw controls and forcing five Franklin turnovers.

All told, the Pioneers dominated the game from all aspects. Transy took 40 shots, including 29 on goal, while Franklin mustered just 13. Transylvania scooped up 32 groundballs and pressured the Grizzlies into 25 turnovers in a stymieing defensive performance.

With the win, Transylvania (6-7, 5-2 ORLC) stays in fourth place in the conference standings with two games left to play. The Pioneers return to action Saturday, traveling to Waynesburg for an ORLC matchup scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
