Box Score TERRA HAUTE, Ind. --- Looking forward to a banner 2016, the Transylvania University Pioneers traveled to Rose-Hulman to kick-off its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule and start the New Year by picking up the win as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The Pioneers look to push their conference winning streak to three games as they start their quest for a consecutive HCAC Championship.
The first quarter would have the Engineers leap out to a 14-4 lead on hot shooting before the Pioneers would find their groove and start to chip into their lead. Kristen Hayes would score six points in the quarter to kick-start the Pioneer offense for the coming quarters. The second quarter would see the Pioneers score 22 points in the quarter and go from a six-point deficit to a three-point lead at halftime, 30-27. Celia Kline would be perfect from the field in the quarter hitting two three-point baskets and adding another to finish the half with 8 points.
The Pioneers would keep the hot hand in the third quarter scoring 17 points and leading 47-43 going into the final frame. Hayes continued with the hot hand in getting to the basket pumping in seven points. The final quarter of regulation would see the Engineers chip away at the Transylvania lead to tie on two separate occasions, the latter being a 58-58 tie with :07 seconds left in regulation. This time would give the Engineers enough of an opening to hit a banked in three-pointer as time expires to win 61-58.
Kristen Hayes led all Pioneer scorers with 18 points adding in six rebounds. She was followed in scoring by Katelyn Smith with 12 and Celia Kline with 11. The Pioneers return to Lexington on January 6th for their next conference matchup with Earlham College. Game starts at 7:30p.m.
