Box Score Wilmington, Ohio – The Transylvania women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, concluding its opening weekend with a 77-34 victory against the Olivet College Comets at the Damon's/Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament at Fred Raizk Arena on Saturday afternoon.
After Olivet took a 15-14 lead towards the end of the first quarter, the Pioneers utilized a 12-0 run stretching into the second quarter to take control of the game for good. Sophomore guard Taylor Jackson commenced the second quarter on a personal 5-0 run to put the Pioneers ahead, 20 to 15. Sophomore guard Celia Kline followed with a pair of free throws, followed by a layup from freshman forward Jenna Carothers.
Junior forward Rachel Cox, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, hit a layup with 6:16 remaining in the half to hand the Pios a 26-15 advantage, completing the 12-0 run.
The Pioneers received heavy contributions from freshman forward Ashton Woodard, who came off the bench in the third quarter with 10 points, adding to her game-high total of 18. The Pioneers swarmed the Comets in the second half, outscoring them 43-14 for the one-sided final margin.
Sophomore guard Sarah Ashley reached double-figure scoring with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Kline had an all-around performance with 10 points, four assists, three rebounds, and four steals.
Freshman guard Shelby Boyle keyed the defensive effort for the Pioneers with four blocks, and Carothers checked in with two blocks and six points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting night from the field.
Transylvania's defense was apparent, as it limited Olivet to just 20 percent shooting from the field on the afternoon, and just 11 made field goals. Each Pioneer chipped in as Transylvania registered 37 points off the bench.
Transylvania moves to 1-1 on the season after its opening weekend showing at the Wilmington tip-off. The Pioneers return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday when they open up their home schedule with a four-team Holley Wealth Advisory Group of Hilliard Lyons Thanksgiving Classic at the Beck Center. The classic begins next Saturday as the Pioneers play host to Ferrum College in a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
